Termites are one of the most destructive pests you’ll encounter, devouring wood in structures in Southern California homes. Termites cause damage to wood members throughout the structure. There are three types we deal with: drywood termites, subterranean termites, and dampwood termites. All of these termites require different control methods.
Drywood Termites infest wood with 30% moisture content or less. One colony consists of up to 1600-2000 termites per colony with multiple colonies. Within a structure often swarms are found in attic areas and exterior of structures. Seasonal swarms occur during summer through fall. Tent fumigation is a common control measure although technology has really advanced and other successful methods of control are available today such as orange oil, timbor and premise treatment plans. DAV Pest Control has extensive knowledge and experience performing these treatments.
Subterranean Termites infest wood with 30% moisture or better to survive. One colony consists of one million termites per colony with multiple colonies nesting. Originating sometimes 20 feet underground and usually a structure with infestation will have an excessive moisture condition from a leaky faucet or a slab leak or perhaps a leaking toilet. Standing water attracts the subterranean termites. Treatment of soil would be ideal and eliminating source of moisture and removing any shelter tubes visible.
Dampwood Termites are rare but do exists in Southern California and infest wood with 20% moisture content or better. Characteristics are very similar to drywood termites and twice as large in size as drywood termites. Control methods are practically identical, removal of wood is also a control measure.
